Swann Auction Galleries Sale #2722: The Rare & Important Travel Posters auction continues to live up to its name, offering most of the world's most prominent travel poster designers, including Roger Broders, James Northfield, David Klein, Roger Soubie, Mario Borgoni, Leopoldo Metlicovitz, Ottomar Anton, Adolf Treidler, Roger de Valerio, Henry George Gawthorne, Leslie Ragan and many others. One of the most scarce and beautiful British travel posters from the 1930s, Why Not Visit London for a Few Days, by Fred Taylor, is an exquisite nighttime scene of Piccadilly Circus. With its stylish, bustling foot and automotive traffic, neon lights and nocturnal illumination, the poster is so hard to find, we could not locate a single other copy to have come to auction.
Also from the British Rail Company comes Arthur C. Michael's tender and charming Flexstowe / Its's Quicker By Rail, 1934, in which a young girl sits on her grandfather's lap inside a train carriage, admiring the things they are passing along the way.
Among the American railroad companies, featured are Anthony Hansen's The Palisades of the Hudson / New York Central Lines, circa 1930s, Frederic Madan's Niagara Falls / New York Central Lines, circa 1928; Frank Hazell, West Point / New York Central Line, 1927; and Chesley Bonestell, The New York Central Building.
An extremely scarce poster by Ottakar Stfl, promoting travel to Baska, and another rare Czech poster by Frantisek Cardos promoting travel in the Czech lands from 1937 are included.
